Science Racks

Science racks are the individual structures that hold the scientific equipment in the cabin of the aircraft. Some also serve as workstations for the instrument operators onboard. They are open shells supplied to the community to install their equipment (provided that they conform to the safety requirements). The update of these racks focuses on the repeatability of the fabrication of each rack and adding interfaces for extra flexibility. This project also considers rack ergonomics for users and will look at improved safety features and transportation around the aircraft. Although more racks are being made, old racks remain compatible and many existing racks will be repurposed as part of the project. This work is being done in parallel to improving the process for certifying equipped racks for the aircraft.
