Particle Analysis by Laser Mass Spectrometry – Next Generation (PALMS-NG)

Single particle composition analysis

This instrument provides the capability to make in-situ measurements of single-particle composition and mixing state. It will be a replica of the Particle Analysis by Laser Mass Spectrometry-Next Generation (PALMS-NG) recently designed, built and operated for NOAA research platforms and create an equivalent national capability.

Based on a laser ablation technique, single-particle mass spectrometry is the only way to directly measure the composition of single particles. The instrument can be used to identify sources, transport, and optical properties of dust; the detection of bioaerosol mixed with dust and marine aerosols, and the examination of organic matter within sea-spray. Operation on an aircraft platform will provide unique insights into land-atmosphere-ocean interactions in the remote environment which can only be accessed via air.
