Electrical Power Systems

The electrical power systems are fundamental to the aircraft’s research capabilities. This project will develop the electrical power systems to be able to support the new instrumentation and provide more flexible power options in the future.

Redundant wiring will be removed for weight reduction. The Science Power Warning System will be upgraded and the feasibility of redesigning it to allow logging of power load data will be assessed. The Frequency Converters are also being upgraded, with a focus on the cooling system to address acoustic noise during operation and ensuring system operation doesn’t affect cabin temperature.

Sidewall service points (SSPs) will be upgraded and repositioned and additional SSPs will be installed to support future science needs and cabin development. Non-science power availability (i.e. for laptops and workstations that scientists use while on board) will be improved. Should a need be identified, new provisional science wiring may be installed. More targeted load shedding capabilities will also be explored.
