Heimann KT 19.82 instrument with pyro electric.

The core data product is upwelling brightness temperature (measured over the spectral range 8 to 14µm) in Kelvin at 4Hz.

The manufacturer's specification of the instrument response is available from FAAM. Since 1st January 2016 the Heimann Radiometer will no longer be manually calibrated in flight.

Measurements of surface or cloud top temperatures can be derived by the scientist by accurately modelling the intervening atmosphere between flight level and the surface/cloud. This is typically done by calibration against Met Office non-core ARIES retrievals of surface temperature, for correction of emissivity variation.
