Aim:  To characterise thermodynamic, dynamic and compositional structure of the troposphere over the Sahara desert.  Fennec is a small nocturnal fox found on the northern rim of the Sahara Desert

Objectives:

  • To generate a definitive dataset on the structure and composition of the Saharan atmosphere.
  • To quantify the processes controlling the tropospheric structure, and evaluate how the limited representation of these processes in weather and climate models leads to errors, and how these errors can be reduced.
  • To determine the mechanisms of dust emission from the key source regions in the region at a range of scales and the associated radiative forcing.

Data gathered from the observational phase will be used to provide evaluation data for the UKMO Unified model. FENNEC will gather unique data on the profiles of heat, momentum and turbulent fluxes in the deep convective boundary layer in semi-arid and arid continental regions. Such regions are known to be poorly handled by numerical simulation models. FENNEC will also provide protocols to optimise operational methodologies, thus developing capabilities to make such needed observations.
