FAAM is equally funded by the Natural Environment Research Council and the Met Office, although managed through the National Centre for Atmospheric Science. The BAe-146-301 large Atmospheric Research Aircraft, also known as the ARA, is owned by BAe Systems Regional Aircraft, based at Prestwick in Scotland. The aircraft however is then managed and flown by Directflight Ltd, and maintained by Avalon Aero Ltd. Both companies hold UK CAA approvals in respect of the ARA. Communication between all of these managing stakeholders is crucial to the success of the ARA programme, and much of this communication and co-ordination is managed by FAAM. Further stakeholders are of-course the numerous UK and overseas universities who, mostly funded by NERC, conduct about 50% of the science flown on the ARA, the other 50% being by Met Office's own researchers, mostly within the Observation Based Research (OBR) department. These are mostly co-ordinated through the FAAM Operations Committee. |
